Brown Advisory
Analyst
05/2010 – 05/2011·Baltimore, MD
Context
Tim's first post-Penn job — took the finance path "like everyone else at Penn." Entry-level analyst at Brown Advisory (institutional and UHNW wealth manager). Quickly grabbed more responsibility than the role prescribed, most notably taking over the entire overnight reconciliation process for securities — a critical company workflow.
While working, Tim was studying for the CFA exam and became fluent with the financial calculator, on track to sit for Level [I/II — Tim to confirm] before leaving for CS&P / CyberSpa.
Numbers
- Reconciliation process compressed from 3 hours to 30 minutes (starting at 5 AM). Confirmed with Tim.DataFinance
- Still in production 16+ years later — Tim's process has outlived every colleague from that era at Brown Advisory.DataFinanceStrategy
Note
The lifecycle of the reconciliation system is a genuinely great cover-letter opening for any deep-tech / infrastructure role: it lets Tim show that his first move as a 22-year-old was to turn manual work into a durable system.
Interview-safe stories
- "Still in production 16 years later" — the origin of Tim's systems-first operating style. Ask him to walk through what the process actually did and how he cut it.DataFinanceStrategy
- "Why did you leave the finance path?" — Family friend recruited him as de facto CFO at CyberSpa, knowing he was a math whiz. First taste of building.FinanceStrategy
Skills exercised
Financial analysis, workflow automation instinct (this is the earliest example of the "system, not headcount" pattern that repeats across every subsequent role), CFA-level financial rigor, security analysis, custom performance reporting for institutional and UHNW clients.
